Students from Wirral Met’s Art department have been immersing themselves in the Merseyside art scene, visiting the exhibition of local street artist Paul Curtis.

The artist, who has numerous public murals around Wirral, decided that after seven years of creating public pieces it was time to showcase a collection of his work, launching his first exhibition in Liverpool’s historic Royal Liver Building.

Art students from Wirral Met explored Paul’s wide range of artwork on display at the exhibition, and also got to see a mural being created in real time, of which three will be created during the exhibition.

Students then took part in a Q&A session with the award-winning artist, who shared his career experiences to our learners.

Speaking about the session, Paul said “It was great to chat to meet the students from Wirral Met. I really think that art should be for all and being at the venue everyday means I get to chat to people and not only do they get to ask me questions but I can find out what they think about the street art out that is out there.

Hopefully this will help to inspire students and it's great that now we have so many different jobs within the arts sector with the likes of media and design, there are so many job opportunities opening up around the Liverpool City Region.

When I was younger if you'd said you'd wanted to work in the film industry doing artwork you would've been laughed at, but there's so much opportunity now.”

Sarah Edwards, Arts and Media Manager at Wirral Met said “It was a fantastic experience for our Art students to visit this wonderful exhibition and to have the opportunity to have a Q&A with Paul, who is a real inspiration as a local artist.”

Students from across our Art, Design, Creative Media and Music departments take part in a variety of exhibitions and events throughout their studies to showcase their talents.

Wirral Met degree level students will be exhibiting their work at the Royal Liver Building from May 10 to May 27. For more information about this exhibition, visit Student Art Exhibition at Royal Liver Building (wmc.ac.uk)

Meanwhile, Photography students will be hosting their own exhibition at Oakland Gallery in New Brighton, with the opening night and private viewing taking place on 15 March, whilst Music students have held concerts at local venues Future Yard and Rockpoint Records.
