Wirral Met celebrated the success of its innovative supported internship programme this week (20th November).

The unique programme offers young people aged 16-24 with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan the opportunity to gain practical work-based experience with an employer, providing a smooth transition from education to paid employment and/or further study.

The event showcased students’ workplace successes and highlighted the College’s commitment to enabling students with a learning difficulty or disability to gain access to the world of work.

Awards were presented to students by the Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Tony Smith and Mayoress Barbara Smith, who congratulated students for successfully completing the programme.

Partner employers who support the programme come from hotels, supermarkets, orthodontics, dentists, cinemas, schools and engineering companies.

"It was lovely to see the students develop, keep up the good work."

"This is such an amazing course and so important to people with extra needs to enable them to access work independently. Thank you."

For employers, the programme helps to create a diverse and vibrant workforce and equips them with staff who will be a real asset. For students, the supported internships brings the working world to life and helps participants develop their own career paths.

The programme is offered at Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 and is run on a roll-on/roll-off basis, so students may begin at any point in the year.
